Toyota C-HR Hybrid in Tenerife: Our Driving Review

Ready to drive the Toyota C-HR Hybrid in Tenerife?

When you land at Tenerife South airport and pick up a rental car, you want something that can handle a massive variety of driving conditions. The island is essentially a giant volcano rising out of the Atlantic, meaning you will face everything from fast coastal motorways to incredibly steep, winding mountain passes. We recently spent a few days driving the Toyota C-HR Hybrid across the island to see exactly how it copes with this unique environment.

The C-HR has always stood out for its sharp, angular design, but looking good is only half the battle. We wanted to know if the hybrid powertrain and compact crossover dimensions actually make sense for a typical Tenerife road trip. We took it through the busy resort towns, up into the high-altitude volcanic plains, and down some of the most intimidating cliff roads in the Canary Islands to find out.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Our journey started on the TF-1 motorway, which sweeps along the southern coast. This road is characterized by long, fast sweepers and a general speed limit of 110-120 km/h. Here, the C-HR feels incredibly stable and refined. The hybrid system seamlessly blends petrol and electric power, keeping cabin noise to a minimum. The suspension absorbs the expansion joints and occasional rough patches effortlessly, making it a very comfortable cruiser for getting from the airport to your accommodation.

Things get much more interesting when you turn off the coast and head up the TF-21 towards Mount Teide. This road climbs relentlessly from sea level up to 2,100 m. As you ascend through the pine forests, the air gets thinner and the temperature drops significantly. In a traditional naturally aspirated petrol car, you often feel a noticeable loss of power at these altitudes. However, the electric motor in the hybrid system does not care about thin air. It provides instant torque out of the tight corners, helping the car maintain momentum. The e-CVT automatic gearbox can get a bit loud if you pin the throttle to the floor on the steepest sections, but if you drive smoothly, it manages the climb with very little drama.

The real test for any car in Tenerife is the TF-436 descending into Masca. This road is famous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins and steep gradients. Here, large SUVs feel entirely out of place, and small cars have a distinct advantage. The C-HR hits a sweet spot. It sits slightly higher than a standard hatchback, giving you a better view over the stone walls and barriers, yet it is narrow enough to squeeze past oncoming local buses without inducing panic. The steering is light and precise, making it easy to thread through the tightest switchbacks. The regenerative braking also shines here, allowing you to control your descent speed while sending energy back into the battery, saving the physical brakes from overheating.

We also took the car up north to the Anaga forest roads. This area is a stark contrast to the dry south. The roads are often damp, twisty, and frequently covered in mist. The C-HR maintained excellent grip on the slippery tarmac. The chassis feels composed, and while it is not a sports car, it handles the constant left-right transitions of the forest routes with a reassuring predictability. You can confidently navigate the blind corners knowing the car will go exactly where you point it.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The C-HR is absolutely brilliant when navigating the bustling resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas. Traffic in these areas can be heavy, especially in the evenings. The hybrid system allows you to crawl through stop-start traffic in pure electric mode, which is incredibly relaxing and saves a massive amount of fuel. The compact footprint makes it relatively easy to slot into tight parking spaces alongside the blue-line meters that dominate the resort centers.

However, the striking exterior design does create a few drawbacks. The sloping roofline and the thick rear C-pillars severely limit rearward visibility. When you are trying to reverse out of a tight diagonal parking spot in a busy resort, you have to rely heavily on the reversing camera and parking sensors. Over-the-shoulder visibility is almost non-existent.

Additionally, those same design choices affect the rear passenger experience. While legroom is adequate for average-sized adults, the small, high-mounted rear windows make the back seats feel quite dark and enclosed. If you are travelling with passengers who are prone to motion sickness on twisty mountain roads, the lack of outside visibility from the back might be an issue. It is definitely a car that prioritizes the experience of the driver and front passenger.

Practical notes

If you are planning to rent this vehicle, we highly recommend the Automatic 1.8 L hybrid version, which balances power and efficiency perfectly for the island. Fuel economy is a major strong point. Even with the rigorous mountain climbs, we averaged around 4.8 litres per 100 km during our trip. Given that petrol prices in Tenerife are already quite reasonable compared to mainland Europe, driving a hybrid keeps your travel costs exceptionally low.

Boot space is another practical consideration. The C-HR offers around 377 litres of luggage capacity. In practical terms, this means you can comfortably fit two large suitcases or three medium cabin bags, plus a couple of soft backpacks. It is plenty of space for a couple on a two-week holiday or a family of three, but a group of four adults with full-size luggage will struggle to fit everything in the boot without folding down a seat.

Parking in Tenerife requires patience, especially near popular beaches or trailheads like the Roques de Garcia in the Teide National Park. The C-HR is short enough to fit into standard European spaces, and the folding wing mirrors (which activate automatically when you lock the car) are a lifesaver on narrow village streets where passing traffic gets uncomfortably close.

Verdict

The Toyota C-HR Hybrid is an exceptionally capable companion for a Tenerife holiday. It handles the demanding mountain climbs with electrical assistance, navigates the terrifyingly narrow Masca hairpins with ease, and cruises the coastal motorways in total comfort. The fuel efficiency is outstanding, and the automatic gearbox removes the stress of constant shifting on the island’s steep inclines. While the rear seats might feel a bit dark and the rear visibility requires reliance on the camera, the overall driving experience is smooth, confident, and perfectly suited to the diverse roads of this volcanic island.
