Tenerife is an island of dramatic microclimates and sharp elevation changes. When you want to experience the warm sunshine of the southern coast and the crisp air of the mountains in a single afternoon, a convertible vehicle makes perfect sense. We recently spent a few days driving the Volkswagen T-Roc Cabrio across the island to find out exactly how it handles the diverse and demanding local road network.

The concept of a convertible crossover is quite unusual, but it fits the holiday lifestyle surprisingly well. It combines the raised seating position of an SUV with the open-air freedom of a traditional cabriolet. We took the keys to see if this quirky blend translates into a genuinely good driving experience on some of the most challenging routes in the Canary Islands, from coastal motorways to misty forest tracks.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Our journey began on the TF-1 motorway, cruising along the sunny southern coast. This major artery is characterised by long, fast sweepers where high-speed stability is key. Turning inland, we tackled the TF-21 climbing towards Mount Teide. This road ascends rapidly to 2,100 metres above sea level. Thankfully, the turbocharged engine maintains its pulling power well into the higher elevations, ensuring you never feel like a rolling roadblock on the steep inclines. The real shock on this route is the sudden temperature drop as you enter the volcanic caldera. We found ourselves reaching for the roof switch as the air turned bitterly cold. The electric soft top closes in just nine seconds, a very welcome feature when the mountain weather changes rapidly.

The ultimate test of any car on this island is the TF-436 descending into the Masca valley. This road is infamous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins and blind corners. Traditionally, small city cars have a distinct advantage here. The T-Roc Cabrio is relatively wide, which means you need to be highly aware of your road positioning when meeting oncoming coaches or delivery vans. However, the elevated driving position is a massive benefit, allowing you to see over the low stone walls and anticipate approaching traffic much earlier than you could in a low-slung sports car. The steering is light and predictable, making the endless tight manoeuvres less of a chore.

On a different day, we headed north to explore the Anaga forest roads. This rural park is a completely different world compared to the dry south. The dense laurel forests trap moisture, leaving the twisty roads permanently slick with damp leaves and prone to sudden mist. Navigating these roads requires smooth inputs and reliable traction. The front-wheel-drive chassis of the T-Roc proved predictable and safe, offering plenty of grip even when the tarmac was wet. It is not a sports car, so the body will lean if you push it hard into a corner, but it remains composed and communicative enough to inspire confidence in poor weather conditions.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The T-Roc Cabrio excels at relaxed touring. The lack of a metal roof means you get an uncompromised, panoramic view of the towering cliffs of Los Gigantes and the sprawling pine forests of Corona Forestal. The ride quality is excellent, absorbing the ruts and bumps frequently found on older rural roads. The interior is logical, well put together, and features an intuitive infotainment system that makes navigating unfamiliar island routes completely straightforward.

However, we must be honest about its driving drawbacks. The heavy structural reinforcements required to safely remove the roof add significant weight to the vehicle. You can feel this extra mass when accelerating out of tight corners or when braking heavily on steep descents. It is not a car that rewards aggressive driving. Furthermore, while the front seats are spacious and comfortable, the rear legroom is quite tight. Adults will find long journeys in the back seats uncomfortable, especially with the roof up, which severely restricts rear headroom and makes the cabin feel slightly claustrophobic.

Practical notes

If you are staying in the popular southern resorts, parking will be a daily consideration. The resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas are notoriously busy, with tight parking spaces and strictly enforced blue-line meters. You will often find yourself parallel parking on a gradient. The T-Roc is compact enough to fit into standard street bays, but the thick rear pillars create large blind spots when the fabric roof is raised. The standard parking sensors and reversing camera are absolutely essential for squeezing into curbside spots without scratching the alloy wheels.

Luggage capacity is another crucial factor for visitors. The folding roof mechanism eats directly into the boot space, leaving you with a rather narrow opening and limited overall volume. Large, hard suitcases will be a struggle to fit. We strongly recommend packing your belongings in soft duffel bags, which can be squashed and moulded into the available space. If you are travelling with just two people, the rear seats offer a highly convenient overflow area for extra bags, groceries, and beach gear.

Fuel economy is respectable for a heavy petrol car. During our mixed driving route, which included steep mountain climbs and stop-start town traffic, we averaged around 6.5 to 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres. The engine is refined and quiet, whether you choose the manual 1.5 litre version for a more engaging drive on the mountain passes, or the automatic 1.5 litre model which makes incredibly light work of heavy resort traffic.

The Volkswagen T-Roc Cabrio is a unique vehicle that suits the Tenerife environment surprisingly well. It is not a razor-sharp driving tool, nor is it the most practical family hauler on the market. Instead, it is a lifestyle vehicle that prioritises enjoyment, visibility, and comfort. The ability to drop the roof and soak in the winter sun while cruising the coastal motorways is an absolute joy. The raised ride height provides excellent confidence on broken mountain roads, and the turbocharged engine handles the steep volcanic gradients without a single complaint.
