Tenerife is an island of extreme contrasts. Within a single hour, you can go from baking sunshine at sea level to shivering in thin mountain air, navigating roads that change from wide, perfectly paved motorways to single-lane cliffside tracks. How it drives on Tenerife roads

Our journey began on the TF-1 motorway, which traces the southern coast of the island. This road is characterised by long sweeping curves and fast-moving traffic. Here, the Q8 feels completely at home. The cabin is remarkably quiet, filtering out the wind and the roar of the tires on the hot asphalt. The suspension absorbs the expansion joints effortlessly, making it an exceptional cruiser for getting from the airport to your hotel in total comfort.

Turning inland, we took the TF-21 climbing up to Mount Teide. This road ascends to over 2,100 metres above sea level. As you climb, the air gets noticeably thinner and the temperature drops sharply. We drove the Automatic, 3.0 L, 5 seats variant, and the engine proved its worth on these steep inclines. The turbocharged V6 did not seem to care about the altitude, delivering smooth, consistent power to pull the heavy car up the mountain without any hesitation. The automatic gearbox shifted intelligently, holding lower gears just long enough to maintain momentum on the steeper gradients.

The real test came when we headed towards the Teno Rural Park and onto the infamous TF-436 descending into Masca. This road is a spectacular feat of engineering, carved directly into vertical cliffs with extremely narrow hairpins. Frankly, small cars have a massive advantage here. The Q8 is nearly two metres wide, and you feel every millimetre of that width on the TF-436. You will find yourself holding your breath when a local bus approaches from the opposite direction. The steering is precise and the brakes are strong, but physics cannot be ignored. You have to drive very slowly and carefully, constantly checking your mirrors to ensure you are not scraping the volcanic rock walls.

Later, we drove up to the Anaga forest roads in the north. This area has its own microclimate. It is frequently damp, twisty, and often covered in a thick mist. The all-wheel-drive system of the Q8 inspired a lot of confidence on these slippery, leaf-strewn corners. Even when visibility dropped to just a few metres, the elevated driving position and the sure-footed grip made the drive feel secure rather than stressful.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Audi Q8 shines brightest when the roads are open and the distances are long. If your itinerary involves cruising between luxury hotels, visiting the capital Santa Cruz, or taking the smooth roads up to the Teide cable car station, you will be deeply impressed by the ride quality. It isolates you from fatigue. You can spend four hours driving around the island and step out feeling completely refreshed.

However, we must be honest about its drawbacks. This car does not shine in historic town centres or on the extreme mountain roads like Masca. Its footprint is simply too large for the narrowest infrastructure of Tenerife. If you are a nervous driver who dislikes squeezing past oncoming traffic on single-lane roads with drops on one side, taking the Q8 into the remote mountains will be a stressful experience. You will constantly wish you were in a smaller hatchback.

Practical notes

Parking requires patience and planning. Down in the resort streets of Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas, space is at a premium. The blue-line meters mark the paid parking zones, and the bays painted on the street were clearly designed for smaller European cars. You will often find that the Q8 hangs out of the lines slightly, or that you have to skip two or three available spaces because they are just too tight to reverse into without risking the alloy wheels. We highly recommend using underground parking garages where possible, though even there, you will need to navigate tight concrete ramps carefully.

Fuel consumption is another factor to consider. While cruising on the TF-1, the 3.0-litre engine is reasonably efficient for its size. However, the constant climbing and descending required to explore the island takes a toll. Expect your fuel economy to drop significantly when tackling the 2,100-metre ascent to Teide. Fortunately, petrol stations are plentiful along the coasts and major highways, though they are sparse in the high mountains.

For luggage, the Q8 is incredibly practical. The boot is vast and easily swallows four large suitcases along with beach gear and day packs. If you are travelling as a group of four or five adults, everyone will have plenty of legroom and shoulder room. The rear seats are spacious enough that passengers will not complain even on a full-day island tour.

The Audi Q8 is a magnificent piece of machinery that offers a first-class travel experience. In Tenerife, it provides a beautiful, quiet sanctuary from the heat and the noise of the busy tourist areas. It climbs the highest mountains with ease and grips the damp northern roads with total security.

Just remember that you are bringing a very large vehicle to an island with some very small roads. If you plan your routes to avoid the tightest cliffside passes and use proper parking garages in the resorts, the Q8 will reward you with an exceptionally comfortable and luxurious driving holiday. It requires a confident driver who knows the dimensions of their vehicle, but for those who value comfort and power, it is a superb choice for exploring the diverse landscapes of Tenerife.
