Tenerife is an island of extremes. Within a single hour, you can transition from baking coastal sunshine to the thin and chilly air of a high volcanic crater. To truly experience everything this varied landscape has to offer, you need a vehicle that can adapt instantly to rapidly changing conditions. We wanted to know exactly how a heavy, powerful luxury SUV copes with the island’s unique topography, shifting weather patterns and demanding gradient changes.

We spent a few days finding out. We took the keys to the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid at Tenerife South airport and mapped out a route that would test it across every type of tarmac the island could throw at us. From the fast sweeps of the southern motorways to the notoriously tight hairpins of the western cliffs, we drove the island end to end. How it drives on Tenerife roads

Starting out on the TF-1 motorway along the south coast, the Cayenne feels entirely in its element. The air suspension irons out the bridge expansion joints, and the heavy curb weight actually works to your advantage by planting the car firmly on the road against the strong crosswinds near El Medano. You can glide past the coastal towns with minimal wind noise and zero local emissions, enjoying the premium audio system and the highly supportive leather seats.

However, the real test begins when you turn off the motorway and head inland. We pointed the nose up the TF-21, the famous and spectacular road climbing to Mount Teide. This route takes you from sea level up to roughly 2,100 metres into the heart of the national park. As you ascend through the pine forests, the air thins out and the temperature drops significantly. In a traditional naturally aspirated car, you would feel a noticeable loss of power at this altitude. The Cayenne E-Hybrid simply does not care. The combination of the turbocharged engine and the electric motor provides relentless torque all the way up the mountain. You can overtake slower tourist buses on short straights with absolute confidence.

The steering is remarkably precise for a vehicle of this size, allowing you to place the front wheels exactly where you want them on the sweeping uphill bends. Porsche has done an excellent job tuning the chassis to hide the weight of the batteries. On the way back down towards the coast, the regenerative braking helps to top up the battery. Hybrid cars often suffer from an inconsistent brake pedal feel as the system switches between regeneration and physical friction brakes, but the Cayenne manages this transition smoothly, giving you the confidence to brake late into the downhill hairpins.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

If the sweeping curves of the TF-21 highlight the strengths of the Cayenne, the TF-436 descending into Masca exposes its physical limitations. This road is legendary for a reason. It is carved directly into the side of extreme cliffs, featuring extremely narrow hairpins, blind corners and steep drops. Small cars have a massive advantage here. The Cayenne is undeniably wide, and you will feel every single millimetre of that width when you meet a local minibus coming the other way. We had to rely heavily on the surround-view cameras to squeeze past oncoming traffic without scraping the large alloy wheels on the jagged rock faces. The steering is accurate, but physics cannot be ignored. You will find yourself breathing in and folding the mirrors more often than you would like. It is certainly doable, but it is not a relaxing experience for the driver.

Conversely, the Cayenne shines brilliantly when the weather turns sour. To test this, we drove up into the Anaga forest roads in the extreme north of the island. These ancient laurel forests are beautiful, but the roads cutting through them are often damp, incredibly twisty and shrouded in thick, unpredictable mist. The intelligent all-wheel-drive system provides immense grip on the slippery, leaf-strewn tarmac. The sure-footed nature of the chassis gives you the confidence to maintain a decent, safe pace even when visibility is poor and the surface is wet. The heated seats and excellent climate control keep the cabin cozy while the exterior temperature hovers in the low teens. It feels like a safe, impenetrable vault in these gloomy conditions, completely isolating you from the elements outside.

Practical notes

Living with the Cayenne in the busy resort areas requires some forethought. Navigating the resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje and Playa de las Americas is straightforward enough from a driving perspective, but parking is another story entirely. The tight street parking spaces and blue-line meters are clearly designed for compact hatchbacks and small rentals. You will often find the Cayenne protruding slightly from standard bays, requiring you to hunt for end spaces. Furthermore, the underground hotel car parks often feature tight concrete pillars and steep ramps that demand your full attention and heavy use of the parking sensors.

Fuel economy is highly dependent on how you use the plug-in hybrid system. The charging infrastructure on Tenerife is still developing, making a plug-in hybrid a smarter choice than a full electric vehicle for exploring remote areas. If your accommodation offers overnight charging, you can do most of your coastal resort hopping on electric power alone. Once the battery is depleted, the petrol engine is relatively thirsty, especially when hauling the car up steep mountain gradients like the climb to Vilaflor. Luggage space is slightly compromised by the hybrid battery located under the boot floor, but it is still more than adequate for four adults carrying large suitcases for a week-long stay. The hybrid system makes a lot of sense for short, silent trips around the southern resorts, while the underlying Porsche engineering ensures it remains genuinely engaging to drive on sweeping mountain roads. You just have to accept that its sheer size makes the narrowest cliff routes and the tightest resort car parks a bit stressful. If you value luxury, interior space and all-weather capability above ultimate nimbleness, it is a fantastic companion for exploring the island.
