Tips for Driving in Tenerife
Toll-free TF-1 and TF-5 highways
All roads in Tenerife are free to use. The TF-1 highway runs along the south and east coast from Santa Cruz past Tenerife South Airport to Adeje, and the TF-5 runs along the north coast from Santa Cruz to Puerto de la Cruz and Los Realejos.
No gas stations in Teide National Park
There are no gas stations on the roads inside Teide National Park. Fill the tank on the coast or in the towns below the park before you start the climb.
Teide road closures for ice and snow
In winter the Cabildo closes the TF-21, TF-24 and TF-38 to Teide when there is ice or snow on the road, sometimes for several days. The Cabildo de Tenerife road information service shows which roads are open, so check it before you drive up.
Driving down from Teide
The roads from Teide drop around 2,000 meters to the coast. Shift down instead of riding the brakes, and expect cloud and cold near the top.
Cyclists on the roads to Teide
The roads up to Teide are popular with cyclists all year round. Spanish law requires at least 1.5 meters of space when you pass a cyclist, and you may cross a solid line to do it when the road ahead is clear.
Parking at the Teide cable car
The parking lot at the lower cable car station on the TF-21 is free, but on busy days it fills up in the morning, so come early. Park only in marked spaces.
Road to Masca (TF-436)
The TF-436 to Masca is narrow and full of hairpin bends. On days of high fire risk the Cabildo can close it to visitor cars from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; Titsa bus 355 then runs from Santiago del Teide and Buenavista del Norte.
Driving in Anaga Rural Park
The TF-12 across Anaga Rural Park is narrow, steep and often in cloud. Parking at Cruz del Carmen and at the viewpoints is limited, so come early and turn on your low beams in fog.

The north of the island, La Laguna and the area around Tenerife North Airport are often in cloud or fog while the south is sunny. Turn on your low beams on the TF-5 and TF-24 when visibility drops.
