Renault Megane E-Tech Electric Tenerife Driving Review

Ready to drive the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric in Tenerife?

Tenerife is an island that demands a lot from any vehicle you choose to drive. In a single afternoon, you can transition from baking coastal sunshine to the freezing, thin air of a volcanic crater, before descending through ancient, dripping forests. To truly understand how a modern electric vehicle copes with this extreme geography, we spent a few days putting the Renault Megane E-Tech Electric through its paces across the island’s most demanding routes. We wanted to see if this stylish hatchback is actually a practical choice for exploring the varied landscapes of the Canary Islands.

Electric vehicles are becoming a common sight here, and the Megane E-Tech Electric stands out with its sharp styling and compact footprint. We drove the Automatic, 100 kWt, 5 seats version to evaluate its performance, comfort, and real-world range. From the fast coastal motorways to the tightest mountain hairpins, this is our comprehensive account of what it is actually like to drive this French EV on the roads of Tenerife.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Our journey began on the TF-1 motorway, which traces the southern coast of the island. This road is characterized by long fast sweepers and heavy traffic near the major resorts. The Megane E-Tech feels exceptionally stable here. The heavy battery pack is mounted low in the floor, which gives the car a planted, secure feel even when the coastal crosswinds pick up near El Medano. The instant torque makes merging onto the fast-flowing TF-1 effortless, and the cabin remains impressively quiet at highway speeds, allowing you to actually enjoy the sound system.

However, the real test of any car in Tenerife is the climb up the TF-21 to Mount Teide. Starting from sea level, this road twists its way up to over 2,100 meters. In a traditional combustion engine car, you often feel the engine struggling as the air thins out, accompanied by a noticeable drop in power. The electric Megane completely ignores this altitude change. The power delivery remains smooth and relentless all the way to the cable car station. As we climbed higher and the temperature dropped significantly, the car’s thermal management system kept the battery operating efficiently. The regenerative braking also proved to be a massive advantage on the long descent back down, feeding valuable kilometers back into the battery rather than cooking the brake pads.

Next, we pointed the car towards the notorious TF-436 into Masca. This road is famous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins and blind corners. Large SUVs often get stuck here, requiring stressful multi-point turns to navigate the bends. This is where the compact dimensions of the Megane E-Tech Electric truly shine. The steering is light and direct, allowing you to place the car exactly where you want it. The short overhangs mean you do not scrape the front bumper on steep transitions, and the instantaneous electric response helps you zip out of the tightest uphill hairpins with confidence.

Finally, we took the car to the Anaga forest roads in the north. The environment here is a stark contrast to the arid south. The roads are damp, twisty, and often misty. The Megane’s traction control system worked overtime on the slick tarmac, but it always intervened smoothly without violently cutting power. The bright LED headlights cut through the thick forest fog effectively, making this often intimidating drive feel much more manageable.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric excels in its drivability and its suitability for Tenerife’s unique topography. The combination of a low center of gravity, punchy electric motors, and compact dimensions makes it a joy to drive on mountain roads. The regenerative braking is perhaps its strongest asset for an island with so much vertical elevation. You can comfortably drive down from Teide almost entirely using the regenerative braking paddle on the steering wheel, which makes the descent relaxing and highly efficient.

However, we must be honest about its drawbacks. The rear visibility is notably poor due to the small rear window and thick C-pillars. While the digital rearview mirror helps, it takes some getting used to. Furthermore, the rear passenger space is quite cramped. If you are traveling with tall adults in the back, they will likely complain about the lack of headroom and legroom on longer journeys. The ride can also feel a bit stiff on broken pavement, particularly on some of the older, unmaintained roads found in the rural north.

Practical notes

When it comes to practicality in the bustling resort areas of Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas, the Megane E-Tech is a fantastic companion. Parking in these towns is notoriously tight, but the car’s small footprint allows it to squeeze into spaces that larger vehicles have to pass by. Be aware of the blue-line meters when parking on the street. You must pay at the nearby machines during active hours, though electric vehicles sometimes enjoy specific parking perks depending on the local municipality rules.

Charging infrastructure in Tenerife is growing, but it requires some planning. You will find fast chargers near the major shopping centers along the TF-1 and in larger towns, but do not expect to find reliable charging stations in remote areas like Masca or deep inside the Anaga rural park. We highly recommend charging the car to at least 80 percent before attempting the drive up Mount Teide to ensure you have plenty of buffer for the climb.

Luggage space is surprisingly deep for a car of this size, offering 440 liters of capacity. It easily swallowed two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags for our trip. However, there is a high load lip, which means you have to lift heavy bags quite high to get them into the trunk. There is also no front trunk to store the charging cables, so they take up a small amount of space in the main cargo area.

Verdict

The Renault Megane E-Tech Electric is an excellent choice for navigating the diverse and challenging roads of Tenerife. It turns the daunting climbs of the TF-21 and the terrifying hairpins of the TF-436 into genuinely enjoyable driving experiences. The instant electric torque and compact size make it perfectly suited for island exploration. While it may not be the best choice for a group of four tall adults due to the tight rear quarters, it is a brilliant option for couples or small families who want a stylish, capable, and environmentally friendly way to see everything this magnificent island has to offer.
