Volkswagen Taigo Tenerife Driving Review: Real Roads Tested

When you step off the plane in Tenerife, the immediate urge is to grab your keys and hit the road. The island offers an incredible variety of driving environments packed into a relatively small area. We recently spent time driving the Volkswagen Taigo across the island to see exactly how this compact crossover coupe handles the unique demands of Canarian roads. It looks stylish in the car park, but we wanted to know if its driving dynamics match the sharp exterior.

Tenerife is not just a place of gentle coastal cruising. It demands a vehicle that can adapt to high altitudes, sudden weather changes, and extremely narrow village streets. We took the Taigo through the most demanding routes we could find, evaluating everything from highway stability to low-speed manoeuvrability in busy tourist hubs.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Our journey began on the TF-1 motorway along the south coast. This road features long fast sweepers and consistent crosswinds coming off the Atlantic. The Taigo feels remarkably planted here. Despite its slightly elevated ride height compared to a standard hatchback, it does not suffer from excessive body roll. The steering is light but precise, making lane changes and merging into fast-moving traffic completely stress-free. The cabin insulation is also impressive, keeping wind and tyre noise to a minimum at highway speeds.

Things change dramatically when you turn off the coast and take the TF-21 climbing to Mount Teide. Driving up to 2,100 metres above sea level introduces thin air and a noticeable temperature drop. The turbocharged engine proved its worth on this ascent. We found that the manual 1.5-litre version allowed us to keep the revs exactly where we needed them on the steepest sections. The car maintained momentum easily, pulling out of uphill switchbacks without feeling breathless. The brakes also held up perfectly on the long descent back down, showing no signs of fade even after miles of continuous downhill corners.

For a true test of agility, we headed to the TF-436 into Masca. This road is famous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins and blind corners. Small cars have a massive advantage here. The Taigo sits right in the sweet spot. It is elevated enough to give you a clear view over the stone barriers, but narrow enough to squeeze past oncoming coaches without inducing panic. The tight turning circle made navigating the sharpest switchbacks a simple task, rather than a multi-point turn.

Finally, we drove the Anaga forest roads in the north. These roads are frequently damp, twisty, and often misty. The grip levels provided by the front-wheel-drive chassis were reassuring. The Taigo communicates traction limits well, meaning you never feel like the car is going to wash wide on a slippery corner. The bright LED headlights cut through the dense forest mist effectively, making the twisting drive back to the main road much safer.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Volkswagen Taigo shines brightly in its role as a versatile island explorer. Its compact footprint makes it incredibly easy to thread through traffic, while the raised seating position gives you the commanding view usually reserved for much larger SUVs. The 1.5-litre engine provides a great balance of fuel efficiency and passing power. It is punchy enough to overtake slow-moving agricultural vehicles on short straightaways securely.

However, we must be honest about its drawbacks. The sloping coupe roofline that gives the Taigo its sporty look does compromise rear headroom. Taller passengers in the back might find their heads brushing the ceiling on bumpy roads. Additionally, the suspension is tuned slightly towards the firmer side to maintain that sporty feel. While this is fantastic on the smooth tarmac of the TF-1, it can feel a bit jittery when you are driving over broken pavement or the older cobblestone streets found in some historical towns.

Practical notes

Parking in busy resort areas like Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas can be a challenge. The streets are packed, and finding a space often means parallel parking into a tight gap. The Taigo excels here. Its parking sensors and clear reversing camera make slotting into blue-line meters straightforward. You will not find yourself circling the block wishing you had rented a smaller car.

Fuel economy is another strong point. Over our mixed route of highway cruising and aggressive mountain climbing, the Taigo remained surprisingly frugal. You will not need to visit the petrol station constantly, which leaves more time for exploring. If you prefer not to shift gears yourself, the automatic 1.5-litre variant takes all the effort out of driving in stop-start resort traffic, though it does command a slightly different driving rhythm on the steep mountain ascents.

Luggage space is generous for a car of this class. The boot easily swallows two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags, making it perfectly suited for a couple or a small family coming for a week-long holiday. Just remember that the sloping rear window means you cannot stack bulky items right up to the roof.

Verdict

Our time with the Volkswagen Taigo proved that it is a highly capable companion for Tenerife. It blends the easy driving nature of a compact hatchback with the practical benefits of a small SUV. It handles the terrifying drops of Masca just as well as the breezy coastal motorways. While tall rear passengers might grumble about the roofline, the driver will appreciate the punchy engine and confident handling.
