Range Rover Velar Driving Review in Tenerife

Ready to drive the Range Rover Velar in Tenerife?

When we first picked up the keys to the Range Rover Velar, the Tenerife sun was already baking the tarmac outside the airport. We wanted to know what it is actually like to drive this mid-size luxury SUV across an island that throws every possible road condition at you in a single afternoon. From volcanic peaks to crowded beach resorts, Tenerife is a demanding environment for any vehicle, let alone one with such a wide footprint and premium finish.

We spent several days putting the Velar through its paces, deliberately choosing routes that would expose its weaknesses and highlight its strengths. We skipped the standard tourist loops and took it up into the thin mountain air, down into ancient dripping forests, and right through the chaotic coastal traffic to give you a complete picture of the driving experience. This is our honest assessment of how the car performs when faced with real island conditions.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Cruising along the TF-1 motorway on the south coast is where the Velar immediately feels at home. The long fast sweepers that connect the airport to the major resorts are perfectly suited to the sophisticated suspension and highly refined cabin. Road noise is practically non-existent, and the steering feels planted and secure at highway speeds. It is an effortless mile eater, allowing you to relax into the plush seats while the climate control works quietly to keep the cabin cool against the fierce Atlantic sun.

However, the real driving test begins when you leave the coastal highway and head up the TF-21 climbing to Mount Teide. As you ascend toward 2,100 m, the environment changes drastically. The temperature drops noticeably, the pine forests give way to a lunar landscape, and the air grows thin. Here, the powertrain truly proves its worth. The torque delivery remains incredibly smooth, pulling the heavy SUV up the relentless gradients without a hint of hesitation. The transmission shifts intelligently, holding gears just long enough to maintain momentum around the sweeping volcanic curves without straining the engine.

Things get considerably more stressful when you turn onto the TF-436 into Masca. This road is famous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins and sheer drops, and it is exactly here that the Velar feels every single millimeter of its width. Small cars have a distinct advantage on this route. We found ourselves breathing in, constantly checking the side mirrors, and relying heavily on the exterior camera systems to avoid scraping the pristine paintwork against jagged rock faces or oncoming local buses. It requires absolute concentration. The steering, which felt so relaxed on the motorway, demands a lot of input when you need absolute precision on tight switchbacks.

Up in the north, the Anaga forest roads present a completely different type of challenge. These routes are often damp, highly twisty, and frequently covered in a thick, wet misty fog. The all-wheel-drive system inspires immense confidence on the slippery, leaf-strewn asphalt. The Velar grips exceptionally well, and the predictable braking system allows you to carry a decent pace safely through the gloom. It is a highly atmospheric drive, and the superb isolation of the cabin makes the eerie silence of the ancient laurel forest feel even more profound when you pull over to take in the views.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Velar shines brightest as a supreme grand tourer. If your itinerary involves long drives across the island, exploring the wide roads of the national park, or simply moving in absolute comfort between luxury hotels on the south coast, it is very hard to beat. The ride quality is exceptional, isolating passengers from rough patches of asphalt, and the elevated driving position gives you a commanding view of the dramatic coastal scenery over the roofs of smaller traffic.

It certainly does not shine in the dense resort streets of Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, or Playa de las Americas. Navigating these specific areas can quickly become a chore. The streets are heavily congested with pedestrians, erratic scooters, and delivery vans. Finding a space that can safely accommodate the Velar is a genuine headache. Tight underground parking garages with steep ramps and narrow concrete pillars will severely test your spatial awareness. Furthermore, dealing with the blue-line meters requires you to squeeze the large wheels very close to the curb, which is a nerve-wracking task when you want to protect the expensive alloy wheels from ugly scratches.

Practical notes

From a practical standpoint, you need to be prepared for the realities of driving a large SUV on a small, mountainous island. Parking will dictate your daily schedule more than you might expect. We strongly recommend researching parking lots with wider bays before heading into busy towns for dinner. Fuel consumption is another critical factor to consider. While it is reasonably efficient on the flat coastal roads, the constant climbing and descending in the mountains will drain the tank much faster than you might anticipate, and fuel stations are very rare once you enter the national park.

For luggage and passenger space, the vehicle is exceptional. If you are travelling as a family or a group of four adults, everyone will have plenty of head and legroom. The boot easily swallows several large suitcases alongside day bags, beach towels, and hiking gear. We drove the 3.0-litre automatic model, which provides the necessary power for the steep inclines while maintaining a serene cabin environment. At prices starting from EUR 300/day, it is a premium choice, but it delivers a highly premium experience provided you plan your routes wisely and avoid the narrowest village centers.

Verdict

The Range Rover Velar is a magnificent vehicle that brings a touch of undeniable luxury to a Tenerife road trip. It excels on the open highways and the sweeping mountain passes, offering a level of comfort that transforms a simple transit drive into a memorable event. However, you must be willing to accept its physical limitations on narrow village roads and in tight resort parking scenarios. If you value refinement, generous space, and a commanding view of the road, and you are entirely comfortable piloting a larger vehicle, the Velar is a superb companion for exploring the diverse landscapes of this beautiful volcanic island.
