When you arrive on an island as geographically diverse as Tenerife, choosing the right car is a balancing act. You need something comfortable enough for long highway stretches, yet small and agile enough to survive ancient village roads that were originally built for donkeys. We wanted to see if a premium compact hatchback could truly handle everything this volcanic landscape throws at a driver. That is why we spent a week putting the Audi A1 through its paces across the island.

We did not just stick to the easy coastal routes. We took this car from the humid, salty air of the southern beaches all the way up to the freezing, thin atmosphere of Spain’s highest peak. How it drives on Tenerife roads

For a small car, the Audi A1 feels incredibly planted here. The suspension is firm but forgiving, absorbing the expansion joints well while keeping wind noise to a minimum. You can comfortably cruise at the 120 km/h speed limit without feeling like the car is working too hard, which is a common complaint with cheaper subcompacts.

The real test began when we turned off the highway and started the climb up the TF-21 towards Mount Teide. This road takes you from sea level to over 2,100 metres in a surprisingly short distance. As the altitude increases, the air gets noticeably thinner and the temperature drops rapidly. Driving our manual 1.4-litre Audi A1, we had to work the gearbox to keep the revs up. Naturally aspirated engines lose power in thin air, but the A1’s forced induction meant it held its own remarkably well. You do feel a slight power drop near the caldera, but third gear remains your best friend for maintaining momentum through the sweeping volcanic curves.

The short wheelbase of the Audi A1 allowed us to navigate the tightest switchbacks without needing to perform three-point turns, a fate that frequently befalls drivers in large SUVs. The steering is light at low speeds, making rapid directional changes effortless, and the brakes showed no signs of fade despite the relentless downhill braking.

We also spent a day exploring the Anaga forest roads in the north. This region is a stark contrast to the dry south. It is often misty, damp, and incredibly twisty. The tarmac here is frequently covered in wet leaves and pine needles. The front-wheel-drive setup of the A1, combined with its precise steering, provided excellent feedback. We always knew exactly how much grip we had on the damp surfaces. It is a joy to thread through the ancient laurel forests, darting from corner to corner with complete confidence.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Audi A1 shines brightest when the roads shrink. Whether you are navigating the terrifyingly narrow lanes of Masca or trying to squeeze past a delivery truck in a tiny northern village, the compact dimensions remove a huge amount of stress from the driving experience. The interior quality is another major plus. Even though it is the smallest Audi, the cabin materials feel premium, and the seats provide excellent lateral support for all those mountain corners.

However, we must be honest about its drawbacks. The firm suspension that makes it so much fun on the smooth TF-1 and twisting mountain roads can feel a bit harsh on poorly maintained town streets. Potholes send a noticeable thud into the cabin. Furthermore, while the engine performs admirably, the manual gearbox requires constant attention on steep inclines. If you are stuck behind a slow-moving tourist bus on the steep sections of the TF-21, you will be doing a lot of first-to-second gear shifting. Finally, rear passenger space is cramped. If you are travelling with four tall adults, the people in the back will not enjoy the long drive up to Teide.

Practical notes

Practicality is a mixed bag, but mostly positive for the right type of traveller. Let us talk about the resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas. Parking here is notoriously difficult. Finding a spot often means squeezing into tiny gaps between poorly parked rental vans. The A1 makes this incredibly easy. It fits perfectly into standard blue-line meters, and the excellent visibility means you can parallel park with confidence, even without relying solely on sensors.

Fuel economy is another strong point. Despite pushing the car hard up mountains and sitting in coastal traffic, we averaged very respectable consumption figures. Petrol is relatively cheap in the Canary Islands compared to mainland Europe, but it is still nice not having to visit the pumps every two days. You can easily do a full loop of the island, including the Teide climb, on a single tank.

Luggage capacity is exactly what you would expect from a premium supermini. The boot will comfortably swallow two medium-sized suitcases and a couple of soft backpacks. If you are a family of four with full-size hard luggage, you will struggle to fit everything in without folding down a rear seat. Because of this, the Audi A1 is best suited for solo travellers, couples, or a small family with young children who pack light.

Driving in Tenerife is an experience of extremes. You need a car that can handle high-speed coastal winds, freezing high-altitude climbs, and terrifyingly narrow cliff drops, all in the same afternoon. The Audi A1 handles this diverse environment with a level of sophistication that most small cars simply cannot match. It gives you the agility needed for Masca, the grip required for Anaga, and the cruising comfort desired for the TF-1.
