Up in the north, the Anaga forest roads present another set of driving conditions. These routes are frequently damp, twisty, and often covered in a thick mist. The Caddy handles the slippery conditions predictably. The traction control steps in smoothly if the front wheels scramble for grip on wet leaves. The high seating position is a massive bonus when trying to see through the dense Laurel forest mist, giving you a better view of the road ahead than you would have in a lower saloon car.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Volkswagen Caddy shines brightest when it is carrying a full load of passengers and their gear over long distances. The ride comfort is excellent, and the sheer volume of space means nobody is fighting for elbow room. This makes the Teide climb feel significantly more relaxed, as the engine does not need to rev as high to maintain a steady speed up the mountain. Yet, even with the larger engine, the Caddy remains a sensible, steady cruiser rather than an exciting, dynamic drive. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and it does it very well.

Practical notes

Navigating the resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas brings its own set of daily challenges. Tight parking spaces are the norm in these busy areas. The Caddy fits into standard bays, but only just. You will find yourself relying heavily on the parking sensors and the reversing camera to slot it in. When searching for spots along the blue-line meters, you might have to pass on smaller gaps that a standard hatchback could easily squeeze into. Thankfully, the sliding doors mean you can park quite close to other cars or walls without worrying about kids denting the doors of neighbouring vehicles when they get out.

Fuel economy is respectable given the size of the vehicle and the mountainous terrain of the island. Expect to use more fuel on the days you climb Teide or explore the steep grades of Masca, but the smooth motorway runs along the south coast balance the average out nicely over the course of a week.

Luggage capacity is where the Caddy truly dominates. With all seven seats in place, boot space is limited but still sufficient for a few soft bags or a trip to the supermarket. Fold the third row flat, and you have a cavernous cargo area that easily swallows large suitcases, pushchairs, and all your beach gear.
