We found that the Automatic 2.0 L 5-seat variant handled the altitude changes with impressive composure. The turbocharged engine barely noticed the lack of oxygen, pulling strongly out of the tight uphill hairpins. The all-wheel-drive system shifted power seamlessly to the rear wheels when we accelerated out of corners, making the heavy climb feel surprisingly light. The Macan T is a wide vehicle, and we definitely felt its footprint when squeezing past oncoming buses. However, the precise steering allowed us to place the outside wheels exactly where we needed them, inches from the stone barriers. The steel spring suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management kept the body perfectly flat, preventing the heavy side-to-side rolling motion that usually plagues SUVs on this specific descent.

In the north, the environment changes completely. The Anaga forest roads are often damp, twisty, and wrapped in thick mist. The tarmac here is slippery, covered in fallen leaves and moisture from the low clouds. The Macan gave us tremendous grip. We could trust the front end to bite into the damp corners without understeering towards the guardrails. If you opt for the more powerful Automatic 3.0 L 4-seat model, the extra torque requires a delicate right foot on these wet roads, but the traction control intervenes smoothly and safely to keep you pointing in the right direction.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Macan T shines in its duality. It is a genuine pleasure to drive fast on an open road, yet it remains incredibly comfortable when you are just cruising. The driving position is flawless. You sit low enough to feel connected to the chassis, but high enough to read the road ahead. The seats hold you firmly during aggressive cornering on the mountain passes, but they do not cause fatigue during a three-hour stint behind the wheel. The brakes are another strong point, offering excellent stopping power and resisting fade even after a long, aggressive descent from the volcano.

However, we must be honest about its drawbacks. The width of the Macan T is a liability on the island’s oldest rural routes. On the Masca descent, we spent a lot of time holding our breath and pulling in the wing mirrors to let local traffic pass. Furthermore, the firm suspension tuning, which is so rewarding on the smooth TF-1, can feel slightly harsh over the broken, unpaved tracks leading to remote black sand beaches. This is a road car first and foremost, not a rugged off-roader. If your itinerary includes a lot of dirt tracks, you will feel the bumps.

Practical notes

When you leave the mountains and enter the resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas, practicality becomes your main concern. Tight parking is a reality here. You will spend a lot of time hunting for spaces marked by blue-line meters, which dictate paid street parking. The Macan T is equipped with excellent parking cameras and sensors, which are absolutely essential when reversing into small parallel spots on steep hills. The turning circle is reasonable for a car of this size, but you will still find yourself doing three-point turns in the tighter hotel car parks.

Fuel consumption is something to keep in mind. The constant climbing and descending on Tenerife burns through petrol much faster than flat motorway driving. The fuel tank gives you a decent range, but you will find yourself visiting the petrol station frequently if you spend your days exploring the high-altitude routes. We recommend filling up on the coast before tackling the TF-21, as fuel stations are scarce once you enter the national park.

Luggage space is perfectly adequate for a standard holiday. The boot easily swallows two large suitcases and a few soft bags. It suits couples who want a luxurious driving holiday, or small families who need the rear doors but do not want to sacrifice driving dynamics. The rear seats offer acceptable legroom for adults on shorter journeys, though taller passengers might find headroom slightly restricted on longer trips across the island.
