Lamborghini Urus Tenerife Driving Review

We have driven many fast cars across the Canary Islands, but bringing a raging bull to a volcanic island feels distinctly different. The Lamborghini Urus promises supercar performance wrapped in a practical, high riding body. We wanted to see if that promise holds true when faced with the extreme geographical variety of Tenerife, an island known for both its wide coastal highways and its terrifyingly narrow mountain passes.

Over three days, we pushed this heavy, aggressive machine across every type of tarmac the island has to offer. From sea level motorways to roads above the clouds, we tested the Automatic 4.0 L 5-seater to find out exactly what it is like to pilot such an imposing vehicle in a place where space is often at a premium.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

The TF-1 motorway wraps around the south coast of the island and serves as the main artery connecting the airport to the major resorts. Here, the Urus is completely in its element. The long, fast sweepers of the TF-1 allow the twin turbo V8 to stretch its legs comfortably. The ride is firm but compliant in Strada mode, absorbing expansion joints with a muted thud. You sit high, looking down on the usual stream of holiday rental hatchbacks, with endless reserves of power available at a twitch of your right foot. The cabin remains remarkably quiet at cruising speeds, making it an exceptional grand tourer.

Turning inland and pointing the nose toward the sky, we took the TF-21 climbing up to Mount Teide. This road rises to over 2,100 meters above sea level. In naturally aspirated cars, the thin air at this altitude strangles engine performance noticeably. The Urus, however, relies on heavy forced induction. The turbos spool up effortlessly, completely ignoring the lack of oxygen, and fire the heavy SUV out of steep uphill corners with shocking violence. As you climb, the temperature drops significantly, sometimes by 15 degrees or more compared to the coast. The heated seats and thick glass keep the cabin isolated, while the massive carbon ceramic brakes ensure that the inevitable descent is handled without a hint of fade.

We then took the car to the extreme north to explore the Anaga forest roads. This ancient laurel forest is often cloaked in thick mist, leaving the tarmac permanently damp and slippery. The roads here are incredibly twisty and covered in leaf litter. This is where the sophisticated all wheel drive system of the Urus proves its worth. Even on wet, unpredictable surfaces, the grip levels are staggering. You can feel the torque vectoring system pushing power to the outside wheels, forcing the nose into the apex. It feels much smaller and lighter than it actually is, dancing through the mist with a precision that defies its massive kerb weight.

But the illusion of a small car shatters completely when you enter the TF-436 heading into Masca. This road is legendary for its extreme, narrow cliff hairpins and blind corners. Here, small cars have a massive advantage. The Urus is over two meters wide, and on the TF-436, that width becomes a genuine liability. We found ourselves constantly breathing in, folding the mirrors, and praying we would not meet a local bus coming the other way. The steering is sharp, but the sheer physical footprint of the car makes this section of the island stressful rather than enjoyable. You will spend more time watching the parking sensors flash red than looking at the spectacular ravine drops.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Urus shines brightest when it has room to breathe. Wide mountain passes, coastal motorways, and sweeping valley roads are where the chassis tuning and engine power work in perfect harmony. It is an absolute event to drive, generating smiles and turning heads everywhere it goes. The engine note in Sport or Corsa mode is a deep, aggressive bark that echoes beautifully off the volcanic rock faces.

However, it does not shine in historic town centres or on the ancient, goat track roads that crisscross the rural parts of the island. The physical dimensions are simply too large for the infrastructure of older Canarian villages. If your itinerary involves exploring hidden, remote hamlets with single lane access roads, the Urus will feel like a bull in a china shop. You have to be honest with yourself about where you plan to drive. It is a masterpiece of engineering, but it cannot shrink its wheelbase or narrow its track on command.

Practical notes

Driving a luxury SUV in Tenerife comes with specific logistical challenges, most notably when you return to the busy southern coast. In the resort streets of Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas, tight parking is the reality. The Urus barely fits into standard Spanish parking bays. You will need to become very familiar with the blue-line meters, which indicate paid street parking. Finding a gap large enough for the Urus along the beachfront often requires multiple laps of the block. We highly recommend using underground parking garages, though you must approach the steep, narrow ramps with extreme caution to protect the massive alloy wheels.

Fuel consumption is another practical reality. The 4.0 litre V8 is incredibly thirsty, especially when hauling this much weight up the steep gradients of the Teide national park. You will become well acquainted with the local petrol stations. Thankfully, Super 98 is widely available across the island, which is what this engine demands to perform at its peak.

On the positive side, luggage space is excellent. Unlike traditional mid engine supercars where you are lucky to fit a soft duffel bag in the front trunk, the Urus offers a massive rear boot. It easily swallowed three large hard shell suitcases, two carry on bags, and our camera equipment, with room to spare. This makes it a genuinely viable option for a family of four or five arriving at Tenerife South airport for a two week holiday.

Verdict

The Lamborghini Urus is a vehicle of glorious contradictions, and driving it in Tenerife only amplifies its dual personality. It is a family car that sounds like a race car, and a heavy utility vehicle that performs like a track weapon. On the fast, open roads of the south and the dramatic, sweeping climbs toward the volcano, it provides a driving experience that very few cars on earth can match. The sheer force of its acceleration combined with the security of its grip makes it an unforgettable companion for exploring the wider, better paved sections of the island.

You just have to accept the compromises. You will have to skip the narrowest coastal roads and accept that parking in Costa Adeje will require patience and precision. If you are willing to plan your routes to avoid the tightest bottlenecks like Masca, the Urus delivers an intoxicating blend of luxury, space, and raw, visceral thrill. It turns a simple drive to a dinner reservation into an occasion, and transforms the climb to Mount Teide into a genuine driving adventure.
