Opel Grandland Hybrid Tenerife Driving Review

When you land in Tenerife, the immediate question is what kind of car will best handle the island’s extreme geography. We recently spent a few days putting the Opel Grandland Hybrid through its paces here to see how it genuinely copes with everything from fast coastal motorways to the sheer drops of the western mountains.

This is not a small island, and the driving demands shift dramatically within a 30-minute radius. You might start your morning in the warm sunshine of the southern resorts and end up navigating freezing fog at altitude by midday. We wanted to know if a mid-sized family SUV makes sense here, or if you are better off with a tiny city car for your holiday driving.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Starting out on the TF-1 motorway along the south coast, the Grandland Hybrid feels immediately at home. The long fast sweepers that connect the airport to the major southern towns are smooth, and the car settles into a quiet, confident rhythm. The hybrid system seamlessly manages the power delivery, keeping cabin noise exceptionally low and efficiency high as you cruise past the arid coastal landscape. It is a very comfortable place to sit after a long flight, absorbing the occasional expansion joint in the road with ease and remaining stable even when the coastal crosswinds pick up near El Medano.

But Tenerife is defined by its massive central volcano. We turned off the coast and took the TF-21 climbing to Mount Teide. Reaching 2,100 metres above sea level, you notice two things very quickly: the air gets incredibly thin and there is a big temperature drop. In older combustion cars, you can literally feel the engine gasping for oxygen on these steep, relentless inclines. The electric assistance in the Grandland is a massive benefit here. The battery provides instant torque to push the heavy SUV out of tight uphill corners without the engine having to scream or strain. The climate control also handled the sudden drop to near-freezing temperatures perfectly, warming the cabin quickly as we drove through the pine forests and up into the lunar landscape of the national park.

Next, we took it to the true test of any car on this island: the TF-436 into Masca. These are extremely narrow cliff hairpins where small cars usually have the distinct advantage. Here, the Grandland feels every bit of its width. You will find yourself breathing in as local buses squeeze past in the opposite direction, sometimes requiring you to fold the wing mirrors in. The steering is light enough to make the constant lock-to-lock turns manageable, but you have to be highly aware of your placement on the road. The regenerative braking is incredibly useful on the steep descents, saving the mechanical brakes from overheating on the long way down, but the sheer size of the vehicle means you cannot relax for a single second on this particular road.

Up in the north, the Anaga forest roads present a completely different driving challenge. They are damp, twisty, and often misty as the trade winds push clouds through the ancient laurel trees. The Grandland’s suspension handles the broken, uneven tarmac well, absorbing the bumps without throwing the car off its line. The grip levels are reassuring on wet leaves, and the elevated driving position gives you a good view over the low stone walls to see oncoming traffic through the thick mist.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Grandland Hybrid is exceptional as a comfortable, long-distance cruiser. If your trip involves a lot of driving between the airport, the major tourist attractions, and the northern cities via the motorways, it is a fantastic companion. The hybrid powertrain is remarkably smooth, and the cabin insulation keeps wind and road noise firmly at bay. The transition between electric and petrol power is barely noticeable, making for a very relaxing drive across the island.

However, we must be honest about its drawbacks. This is a wide car for a very old, very steep island. On roads like the descent into Masca or the older rural routes, you will frequently wish you were in a much smaller hatchback. The thick front pillars can also obstruct your view slightly when navigating tight mountain switchbacks, forcing you to lean around them to see the apex of the corner. If your itinerary consists entirely of remote mountain villages and tiny coastal hamlets, this might not be the optimal choice for your daily driving.

Practical notes

Parking in the southern resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas can be a genuine headache. The streets are tight, often featuring confusing one-way systems, and finding a space big enough for an SUV requires patience. You will become very familiar with the blue-line meters, and thankfully the parking sensors and reversing cameras make squeezing into small gaps much easier, but you simply cannot change the physical footprint of the car.

Fuel economy is a strong point, provided you drive sensibly. Even when running purely as a hybrid with a depleted main battery, the consumption remains reasonable for a car of this size, thanks to the Automatic 1.2 L 5-seater configuration keeping things efficient on the moving sections. The luggage space is slightly compromised by the hybrid battery located under the boot floor, but it easily swallows two large suitcases and a few soft bags, which is plenty of room for a standard family holiday.

Verdict

The Opel Grandland Hybrid offers a highly refined, comfortable, and efficient way to explore Tenerife. It takes the sting out of the steep climbs to Teide and eats up motorway miles with absolute ease. While it requires extra care and attention on the narrowest cliff roads and in tight resort parking zones, the overall comfort and capability make it a strong contender for families or groups who prioritise a relaxed driving experience over nimble mountain handling. If you plan your routes sensibly, it is a superb base for an island adventure.
