Within a single hour, you can transition from baking coastal highways to freezing alpine ascents, and then find yourself navigating ancient forest tracks that seem entirely forgotten by the sun. The short wheelbase allowed us to pivot around the tightest switchbacks without crossing the center line. The brakes, though small, remained entirely fade-free during the steep descent, providing excellent confidence when glancing down at the sheer drops just inches from the tires.

Later in the week, we took the car north to the Anaga forest roads. These routes are frequently damp, highly twisty, and often covered in a thick, atmospheric mist. The i10 felt secure on the slippery leaf-strewn tarmac. Its predictable handling meant that even when the road surface changed unexpectedly from dry asphalt to wet concrete, the car remained communicative and safe. The headlights cut through the gloom adequately, though the standard halogen bulbs on our model were tested by the dense northern fog.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Hyundai i10 shines brightest when the roads get narrow and the parking gets tight. It is a master of the urban environment and the ancient, single-lane mountain tracks. The visibility is fantastic. The upright windows and thin pillars mean you always know exactly where the corners of the car are, which is a blessing when navigating the stone walls of rural villages.

To be completely honest about its drawbacks, the i10 is not a powerhouse. If you load it up with four adults and a trunk full of heavy hiking gear, the 1.2-litre engine will feel sluggish on the steep hills of the interior. In the busy resort streets of Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas, finding a parking space can consume a significant portion of your evening. The i10 slots effortlessly into tiny gaps that larger rental cars have to abandon. Fuel economy is another strong point.
