Hyundai Bayon Tenerife Review: How It Actually Drives

When you plan a trip to Tenerife, the choice of car matters more than you might expect. The island presents a massive variety of driving conditions within a very small area. One hour you are cruising along a sunlit coastal motorway, and the next you are navigating a damp, misty forest track or climbing above the clouds. We wanted to see how a modern compact crossover handles this demanding environment, so we spent a few days putting the Hyundai Bayon through its paces across the island.

The Bayon is an interesting proposition. It shares its underpinnings with the smaller i20 hatchback but sits slightly higher, offering a bit more ground clearance and visibility. We picked up our test car, a manual 1.2 L model, in the south of the island. Over the next few days, we drove it on everything from the fast sweepers of the TF-1 to the sheer drops of the Masca valley to find out exactly what it is like to drive here.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Let us start with the TF-1 motorway. This is the main artery running along the south coast, connecting the airport to the major resorts and heading up towards the capital. The Bayon feels perfectly stable here. The long fast sweepers are handled with ease, and wind noise is kept to a reasonable level for a car in this class. The 1.2-litre engine requires you to work the gears a bit when joining the motorway or overtaking, but it cruises happily at the local speed limits.

Leaving the coast, we pointed the car up the TF-21 towards Mount Teide. This road is a spectacular climb. You start at sea level and wind your way up to 2,100 metres. The air gets noticeably thinner, and the temperature drops significantly. In a non-turbocharged manual car, steep gradients and thin air mean you will spend a lot of time in second and third gear. The Bayon makes steady progress, but you do have to keep the revs high to maintain momentum on the steepest sections. The steering is light, which makes the constant hairpin bends easy to navigate without fatiguing your arms.

The real test of any car in Tenerife is the TF-436 down into Masca. This road is famous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins and steep drops. Here, the compact dimensions of the Bayon are a massive advantage. When you meet a coach coming the other way on a blind corner, you will be deeply grateful you are not driving a large SUV. The slightly raised driving position gives you good visibility over the stone walls, and the manual gearbox allows you to use engine braking effectively on the steep descents.

Finally, we took it to the Anaga forest roads in the north. The Anaga rural park is a stark contrast to the dry south. The dense canopy of laurel trees blocks out the sun, leaving the road surface perpetually damp and slippery in places. The traction control system intervened smoothly on a few tight wet corners, keeping the car perfectly in line. The heating system also proved its worth here, quickly clearing the misty windows as we drove through low-hanging clouds.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Hyundai Bayon really shines in its balance of size and practicality. It is small enough to thread through narrow mountain passes and squeeze into tight parking spots, yet spacious enough inside that two adults will not feel cramped. The visibility is generally good, and the controls are light and intuitive. It is an incredibly easy car to just get in and drive.

Inside the cabin, Hyundai has kept things very sensible. The physical buttons for the climate control mean you do not have to take your eyes off the road to adjust the air conditioning, a huge safety benefit when navigating the twisting mountain roads. The seats are supportive enough for a full day of driving, though they lack the heavy side bolstering you might want on the sharpest corners.

However, we must be honest about its drawbacks. The 1.2-litre naturally aspirated engine is reliable and smooth, but it lacks low-end torque. On the steep climbs up to Teide or out of the Masca valley, you really feel the lack of a turbocharger. You have to plan your overtakes carefully on uphill stretches and be prepared to shift down frequently. If you are a driving enthusiast looking for a thrilling mountain carve, the soft suspension and light steering will not provide much feedback. It is a car designed for safe, comfortable transport rather than excitement.

Another minor gripe is the road noise on rougher surfaces. While it is quiet on the smooth asphalt of the TF-1, some of the older, coarser roads in the north do transmit a fair bit of tyre roar into the cabin.

Practical notes

When it comes to practicality in Tenerife, parking is usually the biggest headache. In the busy resort streets of Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas, finding a space can be a competitive sport. You will often find yourself trying to parallel park in tight spaces between other rental cars, all while keeping an eye out for the blue-line meters that dictate paid parking zones. The Bayon is brilliant here. It is just over four metres long, meaning it fits into gaps that larger crossovers have to drive past. The light steering makes maneuvering effortless.

Luggage space is another strong point. The boot offers around 411 litres of capacity, which easily swallows two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags. If you are a couple or a small family traveling with standard holiday luggage, you will have no issues. The rear seats are surprisingly roomy for a car of this footprint, offering enough legroom for average-sized adults on shorter trips around the island.

Fuel economy is a mixed bag depending on your route. On the flat coastal roads, the Bayon is very frugal. However, climbing up Mount Teide in low gears will inevitably drain the tank faster. Over our mixed driving route, we found the consumption to be entirely reasonable, and the fuel gauge barely moved during our resort-hopping days in the south.

The Hyundai Bayon is a highly pragmatic choice for a Tenerife holiday. It is not a sports car, and it will not pin you to your seat when you accelerate up a mountain. What it will do is provide reliable, comfortable, and stress-free transport across every type of road this island has to offer.

Its compact size is its greatest asset, making the terrifying hairpins of Masca manageable and the crowded parking lots of Costa Adeje a breeze. The raised ride height adds a touch of comfort and visibility that you do not get in a standard hatchback.
