Tenerife is an island that demands a lot from any vehicle you choose to drive. In a single day, you can transition from perfectly paved coastal motorways to ancient volcanic climbs, and then plunge into dense, mist-covered mountain forests. We wanted to know exactly how a premium compact SUV handles this diverse environment, so we picked up the keys to an Audi Q3 and spent several days covering the absolute best and worst roads the island has to offer.

We did not just stick to the easy routes. We took the Q3 up to the highest paved roads in Spain, navigated the notoriously intimidating cliff edges of the western mountains, and dealt with the everyday reality of parking in busy tourist resorts. How it drives on Tenerife roads

Our journey started on the TF-1 motorway along the south coast. This road is characterized by long fast sweepers and a generally excellent surface, though it can get busy with airport traffic and delivery trucks. Here, the Audi Q3 feels completely in its element. The cabin is remarkably quiet, filtering out the wind noise that usually whips off the Atlantic Ocean. The suspension soaks up the occasional rough expansion joint with ease, making the drive from the airport to the southern resorts completely effortless.

Things get much more interesting when you turn off the motorway and onto the TF-21, the main route climbing up to Mount Teide. This road takes you from sea level to 2,100 metres in a surprisingly short distance. As you climb through the pine forests of Vilaflor, the air gets noticeably thinner and the temperature drops rapidly. We watched the car thermometer fall from a balmy 25 degrees at the coast down to just 8 degrees near the cable car station. The Q3 did not seem to mind the altitude at all. The turbocharged engine provided consistent torque, pulling us out of the steep uphill hairpins without feeling breathless. The steering is light but precise, which makes threading the car through the continuous S-bends quite enjoyable.

However, the real test of our nerves came on the TF-436 into Masca. This road is famous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins and blind corners. Small cars usually have the advantage here, as the lanes are barely wide enough for two vehicles to pass. The Audi Q3 is a compact SUV, but it still feels quite wide when you are staring down the front of an oncoming local bus. We had to rely heavily on the parking sensors and the tight turning circle to negotiate the sharpest switchbacks. You definitely feel the width of the car on the TF-436, and we found ourselves breathing a sigh of relief once we cleared the steepest sections.

Finally, we took the Q3 to the Anaga forest roads in the north. This region is a stark contrast to the dry south. The roads here are damp, twisty, and often misty, winding through ancient laurel forests. The all-weather grip of the Q3 was deeply reassuring on the wet tarmac. The car felt planted and secure, even when the visibility dropped to just a few metres in the thick cloud cover. The predictable brakes and balanced chassis meant we could maintain a smooth, steady pace through the endless curves without upsetting our passengers.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Audi Q3 truly shines when it comes to covering long distances in absolute comfort. The seats are supportive, the climate control easily manages the intense midday sun, and the ride quality is superb on the majority of the island roads. It is a fantastic cruiser that isolates you from the fatigue of driving. The engine provides plenty of overtaking power on the TF-1, and the gearbox is smooth and responsive when you need to drop a gear for a steep mountain incline.

Where it does not shine quite as brightly is in the most extreme, narrow environments. While it is smaller than a Q5 or a Q7, the Q3 is still a relatively chunky vehicle. On the TF-436 to Masca, we wished we were in something a bit narrower. The high bonnet line also means that judging exactly where the front left wheel is on a tight mountain precipice takes a bit of guesswork. Furthermore, the suspension, while incredibly comfortable, leans slightly more towards luxury than sportiness. If you push it hard through the tight corners of the TF-21, you will notice a bit of body roll, reminding you that you are in an SUV rather than a low-slung hatchback.

Practical notes

If you are staying in the popular southern areas like Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, or Playa de las Americas, parking is something you need to consider. The resort streets are notoriously busy, and finding a space can be a daily challenge. The Q3 fits into standard European parking bays, but tight underground hotel garages require a bit of care. Pay close attention to the blue-line meters on the streets, as parking wardens are very active in these tourist hotspots. Fortunately, the reversing camera and parking sensors on the Q3 take the stress out of parallel parking on crowded avenues.

Fuel economy was respectable given the demanding terrain. Climbing a mountain to 2,100 metres will naturally drain the tank faster than cruising on a flat road, but the Q3 averaged out to a very reasonable figure over our mixed driving route. Petrol stations are plentiful along the TF-1 and in the major towns, but make sure you have enough fuel before heading into the Anaga mountains or the Teno rural park, as stations are very scarce in those protected areas.

Luggage space is another strong point. The boot easily swallowed two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags, with room to spare for our hiking boots and jackets. We drove the Automatic, 2.0 L, 5 seats version, and the automatic transmission was a massive benefit. Having to constantly shift gears manually on the hundreds of hairpins ascending Mount Teide would have been exhausting. The automatic gearbox allowed us to keep both hands on the wheel and focus entirely on the road and the spectacular volcanic scenery.

The Audi Q3 is a highly capable and comfortable companion for exploring Tenerife. It absorbs the miles on the coastal motorways with premium refinement and tackles the steep, high-altitude climbs of Mount Teide without breaking a sweat. Its secure handling inspires confidence on the damp, twisting roads of the Anaga forest. While its width can make the ultra-narrow cliff roads of Masca feel a bit intimidating, the overall balance of space, power, and comfort makes it an excellent choice for couples or small families who want to see the whole island in style.
