Tips for Driving in La Palma
Parking reservation for La Cumbrecita (LP-302)
Car access to the La Cumbrecita viewpoint is regulated because the parking lot is small. From 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and until 6 p.m. in busy periods, you need a parking reservation to pass the barrier at El Riachuelo. Reservations open one month ahead.
Roads up to Roque de los Muchachos (LP-4)
From Santa Cruz, take the LP-1 to the Mirca junction and then the LP-4 up the mountain. From the west, follow the LP-1 through Tijarafe, Puntagorda and Garafía to Hoya Grande and turn onto the LP-4. The last 5 km to the summit is the LP-403 through the observatory, and the viewpoint parking lot needs no reservation.
LP-4 closures for snow and ice
In winter the Cabildo can close the LP-4 at Pico de la Nieve on the Santa Cruz side and at Hoya Grande on the Garafía side because of ice or snow. Closures can last for days: after the December 2024 snowfall, the road to the summit reopened about two weeks later.
Observatory road after dark
The observatory area at the summit is closed to visitors at night, but you can still drive the LP-4 up to the junction with the LP-403, where a barrier marks the start of several stargazing spots. La Palma's sky is protected against light pollution, so turn off your headlights once parked.
LP-2 gap after the 2021 eruption
Lava from the 2021 Tajogaite eruption buried about 2.3 km of the LP-2 between Las Manchas and Tajuya. Until the new section opens, expected in early 2027, the road across the lava between La Laguna and Las Norias links Las Manchas with Los Llanos de Aridane.
New coast road to Puerto Naos
Since 2023, the 3.9 km Carretera de la Costa, built across the new lava, links Tazacorte with Puerto Naos, with one lane in each direction. From Puerto Naos and La Bombilla, a 2.3 km road climbs to Las Manchas de Abajo and the LP-2.
LP-3 tunnels under Cumbre Nueva
The LP-3 crosses the island from Breña Baja to El Paso through tunnels under the Cumbre Nueva ridge and is the main link between the east and the west. It is often cloudy at the east entrance and sunny on the west side.
A full day for the northern LP-1
The LP-1 runs about 102 km around the north, from Santa Cruz to Los Llanos de Aridane. There are no motorways on La Palma, and the steep terrain makes every distance take longer than it looks, so plan a full day for the northern loop with stops.
Gas stations in the north and south
On the northern LP-1 there is only one gas station each in Barlovento, Garafía and Puntagorda, and none in Tijarafe or on the LP-4 to the summit. In the south, the only station between the airport area and Los Llanos is in Fuencaliente. Fill up in Santa Cruz, Los Sauces or Los Llanos.
Blue zone in Los Llanos de Aridane
Central Los Llanos de Aridane has a paid blue zone for short stays of up to about two hours. It applies Monday to Friday 9 a.m.–2 p.m. and 4:30–8:30 p.m. (mornings only in August) and on Saturday mornings. Pay at the machine or in the Telpark app; green-zone spaces are mainly for residents.
No parking at Los Brecitos
To hike into the Caldera de Taburiente from Los Brecitos, leave the car at the parking lot in the Barranco de las Angustias near Los Llanos. Taxis run from there along a 13 km track to Los Brecitos in the morning only, and parking at Los Brecitos is not allowed.
