Tips for Driving in Gran Canaria
Parking for Roque Nublo (GC-600)
Parking along the GC-600 near the Roque Nublo trailhead is banned, and the old lot at Degollada de La Goleta has been removed. Park at Cruz de los Llanos or in Tejeda and take Global bus 18 to the trail. During the day, access to the trail must be booked in advance.
Main highways GC-1 and GC-2
The GC-1 highway runs from Las Palmas past Gran Canaria Airport and the southern resorts to Puerto de Mogán. The GC-2 follows the north coast from Las Palmas through Arucas and Gáldar to Agaete; some of its junctions have roundabouts and traffic lights. Like all roads on the island, both are toll-free.
Traffic on the GC-1 near Telde
The GC-1 between Las Palmas and the south carries more than 160,000 vehicles a day, and it backs up most often around Telde, in both directions. Early mornings toward Las Palmas are the worst, but jams can happen at any hour, so leave extra time when you drive to the airport.
GC-3 bypass around Las Palmas
The GC-3 skirts Las Palmas inland, from exit 4 of the GC-1 in the south to the GC-2 near Arucas in the north. More than half of it runs through tunnels and over viaducts. Use it to drive between the south and the north coast without going through the city.
Gas stations in the mountains
In the mountains, gas stations are only in the villages, such as Tejeda, Artenara, San Mateo and Fataga, and most close in the evening. On the GC-200 along the west coast, the only one between Mogán and Agaete is in La Aldea de San Nicolás. Fill up before you head inland or west.
West coast road GC-200 (Agaete–La Aldea)
Between El Risco and La Aldea de San Nicolás, the GC-200 now runs through a tunnel more than 3 km long, the longest in the Canary Islands, and the old cliff road is closed. Between Agaete and El Risco, part of the trip still uses the old road, which can close after rockfalls.
Mountain roads after heavy rain
Heavy rain often brings rockfalls that close mountain roads, sometimes for weeks or months: after one storm in 2026, 22 island roads were badly damaged. After rainy days, check the road closures announced by the Cabildo and 112 Canarias before you drive inland.
Ice and snow on the summit roads
On cold winter days, snow can fall on the summit and ice forms on the roads. The Cabildo then closes roads such as the GC-150, GC-21, GC-134 and GC-135 and the access to Pico de las Nieves, for a few hours or several days.

Road cyclists ride the climbs on the GC-60 through Fataga, the GC-605 past the Presa de las Niñas reservoir and the GC-200 to Mogán all year round. Expect them on bends and descents, and leave at least 1.5 meters when you pass.

When the Cabildo declares a forest fire alert, usually in summer, forest tracks and trails above 400 meters close. The GC-216 into Tamadaba Natural Park can then be closed to visitors' cars, and the Tamadaba picnic area shuts.
