Renault Rafale in Tenerife: Our Driving Review

When you pick up a new car at Tenerife South Airport, the initial plan is usually straightforward. You want to drop your bags at the hotel and maybe find a quiet place for lunch. But the Renault Rafale has a way of changing your itinerary. Its sharp lines and coupe silhouette make you want to skip the hotel entirely and head straight for the mountains. We recently spent a few days putting this striking SUV through its paces across the island to see if the driving dynamics match its aggressive styling.

Tenerife is a demanding environment for any vehicle. You have sea level heat, high altitude chill, wide motorways, and some of the tightest mountain hairpins in Europe. We took the Rafale on a comprehensive loop of the island, testing it everywhere from the misty north to the sunbaked south. Here is how it handled the varied terrain on our journey.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Starting out on the TF-1 motorway along the south coast, the Rafale immediately feels at home. The long fast sweepers that connect the airport to the major southern resorts are effortless. Cruising at 110-120 km/h, the cabin remains remarkably quiet. The suspension absorbs the expansion joints well, and the steering feels planted and secure. It eats up motorway miles with the grace of a much larger luxury cruiser, making the drive from the airport to your accommodation a relaxing experience.

However, the real test begins when you turn inland and point the nose toward the sky. Taking the TF-21 climbing to Mount Teide is a rite of passage for any car on this island. As we ascended past the pine forests and broke through the cloud layer, the air thinned out. By the time you reach 2,100 m, the temperature drop is significant, often plunging by ten degrees or more from the coast. The Automatic, 1.3 L, 5 seats variant we drove handled the gradient beautifully. The turbocharged engine did not feel breathless in the thin air, and the automatic gearbox shifted smoothly to keep the revs in the optimal range during the steep, winding climbs up the volcano.

Things get much more complicated when you venture into the Teno Rural Park. Driving the TF-436 into Masca is an exercise in extreme caution. These are extremely narrow cliff hairpins where small cars usually have the distinct advantage. The Rafale is a substantial vehicle, and you definitely feel its width when a local bus is coming the other way. We had to fold the mirrors a couple of times and rely heavily on the parking sensors and cameras to squeeze past oncoming traffic. The steering is light enough to make lock to lock turns manageable, but the sheer size of the car requires your full attention here.

Finally, we took it up to the Anaga forest roads in the north. This area is completely different from the dry south. The roads are damp, twisty, and often misty. Here, the Rafale felt confident and grippy. The suspension setup strikes a good balance between comfort and body control, meaning it does not lean excessively through the tight corners under the dense canopy of laurel trees. The brakes also held up perfectly on the long, wet descents back toward the capital.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

The Rafale truly shines as an island cruiser for long distances. If your Tenerife itinerary involves driving from Los Gigantes to Santa Cruz, or taking a leisurely trip around the entire coastal ring, you will love this car. The seats are highly supportive, the climate control handles the intense afternoon sun with ease, and the elevated driving position gives you a great view over the volcanic landscape.

It also looks fantastic. In a sea of generic rental hatchbacks, the Rafale stands out. It has a premium presence that looks right at home parked outside a nice restaurant in Costa Adeje or parked by the marina.

But we must be honest about its drawbacks. As mentioned during our Masca descent, the size is a double edged sword. Wide rear pillars restrict rear visibility, which can make reversing out of angled spaces tricky. Furthermore, the aggressive sloping roofline cuts into rear headroom slightly. If you have tall adults sitting in the back, they might find the ceiling a bit close on longer journeys across the island.

Practical notes

When it comes to daily practicality in the busy tourist zones, you need to plan ahead. Navigating the resort streets in Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas can be stressful during peak hours. Tight parking spaces and hunting for blue-line meters will remind you that this is not a compact city car. The surround view cameras are absolutely essential and work brilliantly, but you will still find yourself passing up smaller parallel spots that a smaller hatchback could easily slip into.

Fuel economy was a pleasant surprise. Despite the heavy mountain climbs and the constant air conditioning, the engine remained relatively frugal. We averaged very reasonable consumption figures over our test, which is a major plus given the amount of driving required to truly see the island.

Luggage space is generous. The boot easily swallowed two large hard shell suitcases, a pair of soft weekend bags, and our camera equipment, with room to spare for beach towels and groceries. The digital dashboard and infotainment system are very intuitive, making it easy to connect your phone and navigate to hidden beaches. It perfectly suits a family of four or two couples sharing the driving duties for a week long holiday.

Verdict

The Renault Rafale is a highly capable and stylish companion for a Tenerife adventure. It offers a smooth, quiet ride on the coastal motorways and enough turbocharged punch to conquer the high altitude roads of Teide National Park without breaking a sweat. It brings a touch of modern comfort to your holiday driving experience.

Just be prepared to breathe in tightly when navigating the ancient, narrow cliff roads of Masca, and pack a little extra patience for parking in the bustling southern resorts. If you value comfort, space, and striking design over sheer compact agility, the Rafale is an excellent choice for exploring everything this beautiful island has to offer.
