Puerto de la Cruz is on the green north coast, 30 to 35 minutes from Tenerife North Airport (Los Rodeos) on the TF-5, and 75 to 85 minutes from Tenerife South. Parking follows the line colours: blue is paid on weekday mornings and Saturday mornings, white is free, yellow means never. Plaza del Charco and Lago Martiánez are the underground options for the old town and the César Manrique pools. The free trick locals use is the residential streets climbing the hill above the centre, a 10 to 15 minute walk down. Best drives: the TF-21 through La Orotava up to El Portillo and the national park, about an hour, and the TF-5 west to Garachico in half that.

The north is not convertible country. It is wetter, greener and cooler than the south, the TF-21 gains close to 2,000 m of altitude, and the lanes into Anaga are narrow with blind bends.
