HI-5 and the Los Roquillos tunnel
The HI-5 is the island's main road. It links Valverde with Frontera and the El Golfo valley, about 17.5 km, through the Los Roquillos tunnel, which is more than 2 km long. Before the tunnel opened, the same trip over the mountains took about twice as long.
Tunnel closures and the HI-1 over La Cumbre
The Cabildo sometimes closes the Los Roquillos tunnel for maintenance on weekdays and opens it for only a few minutes each hour. The other route between Valverde and Frontera is the HI-1 over La Cumbre, which takes about 45 minutes and can also close after rockfalls.
Only four gas stations
El Hierro has only four gas stations: one in Valverde, two in the Frontera area (Tigaday and El Matorral) and one in El Pinar, all open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. There is none in La Restinga, Sabinosa or the west around La Dehesa, so fill up before you go there.
HI-500 to La Dehesa and Orchilla
The HI-500 west of Frontera, past Pozo de la Salud, is the main road to La Dehesa, El Sabinar, the Ermita de los Reyes and the Orchilla lighthouse. The stretch to Arenas Blancas is prone to rockfalls and sometimes closes for repairs; the HI-400 El Julan road from El Pinar is the way around.
Road to La Restinga (HI-4)
The HI-4 runs from El Pinar down to La Restinga on the south coast. From the airport, the drive is about 41 km and 52 minutes. There is no gas station in La Restinga, so fill up in El Pinar on the way.
Fog around Valverde
Valverde sits at nearly 600 meters, and fog and low cloud are common in the north of the island, especially around the capital and the San Andrés uplands, where the mist can last all day. Turn on your low beams when visibility drops.
Wildfire alerts close forest tracks
