BMW M2 Competition Tenerife Review: Driving the Island

Tenerife is an island of extremes. You can start your morning at sea level with the sun beating down on your windshield and end up above the clouds by lunchtime. We wanted to know exactly how a high-performance coupe handles these dramatic shifts in altitude, temperature, and road surface. The BMW M2 Competition is widely considered one of the best driver’s cars on the market today. It has a reputation for being sharp, aggressive, and highly engaging.

We spent several days putting it to the test across the island. Our goal was simple. We needed to find out what it is actually like to drive this specific car on these specific roads. We did not want to just look at the spec sheet. We wanted to feel how the suspension deals with broken tarmac in the mountains and how the engine breathes when the air gets thin near the volcano.

How it drives on Tenerife roads

Our journey began on the TF-1 motorway along the south coast. This road is characterized by long fast sweepers and generally excellent surfaces. Here, the M2 Competition feels completely at home. The stability at highway speeds is remarkable. You can settle into the firm sports seats and cover ground effortlessly. The steering is direct and heavily weighted, giving you total confidence as you navigate the sweeping curves between the airport and the southern resorts.

Leaving the coast, we pointed the nose inland and took the TF-21 climbing up to Mount Teide. This is where the driving experience transforms entirely. As you climb towards 2,100 metres, the air gets noticeably thinner and the temperature drops rapidly. Some naturally aspirated cars start to feel breathless up here. The turbocharged inline-six in the M2 Competition simply does not care. It continues to pull hard out of every hairpin. The chassis balance is exceptional on the wide, sweeping corners of the national park. You can feel the rear wheels digging into the volcanic asphalt, pushing you forward with relentless force.

However, the island has a completely different character in the north. We drove into the Anaga forest roads, which are frequently damp, twisty, and often misty. Under the dense canopy of trees, the road surface is much less predictable. This is where you have to respect the power going to the rear wheels. The M2 Competition demands your full attention here. The stiff suspension, which was brilliant on the smooth TF-21, can feel a bit unsettled over the bumps and roots that push through the tarmac in Anaga. You need smooth inputs and a careful right foot.

Then we tackled the TF-436 down into Masca. This road is famous for its extremely narrow cliff hairpins. To be completely honest, small cars have the advantage here. The M2 is a compact coupe, but its wide track and aggressive stance make it feel quite large when you are squeezing past a local bus on a blind corner with a sheer drop on one side. The carbon ceramic brakes are fantastic for the steep descents, but the physical width of the car means you will be holding your breath more often than you might like. We drove the 3.0 480HP Automatic RWD Carbon Fibre model, and the quick-shifting gearbox was a blessing when navigating these tight, stressful sections.

Where this car shines (and where it does not)

This car shines when you have room to let it breathe. It is an absolute joy on the wide, sweeping mountain passes and the coastal motorways. The engine sounds fantastic bouncing off the rock faces, and the chassis communicates exactly what is happening underneath you. If you love driving, the engagement level is off the charts. It feels alive and mechanical in a way that very few modern cars do.

Where it does not shine is in tight, low-speed, unpredictable environments. The suspension is undeniably stiff. On a long day of driving over varied surfaces, that stiffness can become tiring. It is also not a car that you can drive lazily. It wants to go fast, and it requires a driver who is paying attention. If you just want to cruise slowly and look at the scenery without thinking about your throttle inputs, this might not be the right choice. The cabin noise is also quite prominent, which is great for a spirited drive but less ideal if you are trying to have a quiet conversation on the motorway.

Practical notes

Driving a high-performance car in Tenerife means dealing with the realities of the island’s infrastructure. In resort towns like Los Cristianos, Costa Adeje, and Playa de las Americas, the streets are busy and parking is notoriously tight. The M2 Competition sits quite low, so you have to be very careful with steep hotel ramps and high curbs. When parking on the street, you will need to look out for the blue-line meters. Make sure you have downloaded the local parking app or carry some coins, as parking enforcement is strict in these tourist areas.

Fuel is another consideration. There are plenty of petrol stations along the TF-1 and in the major towns, but they are sparse once you head up into the mountains or into the rural north. The M2 Competition is thirsty, especially when you are enjoying the performance on steep inclines. Always make sure you have a full tank before heading up the TF-21 to Teide or venturing into the Anaga mountains.

As for luggage, the boot is surprisingly practical for a sports coupe. You can easily fit two standard flight cabins bags and a couple of soft duffels. It is perfectly adequate for a couple on a week-long holiday. However, the rear seats are very cramped. While it technically has seatbelts in the back, we would only recommend using them for extra luggage or for very short trips. This car is best suited for two people who prioritize the driving experience above all else.

Verdict

The BMW M2 Competition is a spectacular machine that turns a simple drive across Tenerife into a memorable event. It is not the most relaxing way to see the island, nor is it the easiest car to thread through the narrowest mountain villages. It requires respect and attention. But if you are willing to put in the effort, the rewards are immense. It transforms the climb to Mount Teide into a thrilling mechanical symphony and makes the coastal roads feel like your own personal track. It is a car for people who love the act of driving, plain and simple.
