Arona is a municipality, not a single resort, and that trips people up. The coastal half is car hire in Los Cristianos and the eastern end of Playa de las Américas; the town of Arona itself is inland, up the TF-51 in the hills. From the town, the TF-51 keeps climbing to Vilaflor, the highest village on Tenerife, and then joins the TF-21 into the national park and the Teide cable car, roughly an hour and a quarter from the coast. It is a proper mountain road with long climbs and cold air at the top; the cable car car park has 220 spaces and closes outside operating hours, so check the times before you set off.
