Tips for Driving in Lanzarote
Timanfaya National Park (LZ-67)
The LZ-67 between Yaiza and Tinajo is the only road through Timanfaya National Park. Montañas del Fuego is open from 9 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and tickets are sold online for a set date and time. The Islote de Hilario parking lot holds about 90 cars, so arrive in your time slot.
Speed cameras on the LZ-67
Past Yaiza, the LZ-67 crosses the lava fields with no painted lane markings, and the speed limit is 60 km/h. The camera at km 20 issued more than 25,000 speeding fines in 2024, more than any other camera in the Canary Islands.
Dirt tracks to the Papagayo beaches
The Papagayo beaches in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument are reached by about 7 km of dirt tracks from Las Coloradas in Playa Blanca. Visitors who are not island residents pay a small charge per car at the control post. The tracks get potholed after busy summers and rain, so drive slowly.
Main roads: LZ-1, LZ-2 and LZ-3
The LZ-2 runs south from Arrecife past the airport and Tías to Playa Blanca; it has two lanes each way only as far as Tías, about 11 km. The LZ-1 runs north to Órzola, and the LZ-3 ring road around Arrecife links the two. All roads on the island are toll-free.
Hairpins on the LZ-10 to Haría
The LZ-10 from Teguise via Los Valles drops to Haría on tight hairpin bends below the Mirador de Haría. After heavy rain, rockfalls and collapsed walls on these bends can close the road, as happened in March 2025.
LZ-703 closed at Los Hervideros
The LZ-703 coast road between El Golfo and the Janubio salt flats has been closed at Los Hervideros since 2021 because of a sinkhole. To reach El Golfo, take the LZ-704 from Yaiza.
Gas stations in the north
Nearly half of the island's gas stations are in and around Arrecife. North of Guatiza on the LZ-1, there are stations only in Arrieta (open 24 hours) and Haría (until 6 p.m.), and none in Órzola or near the Mirador del Río. There is also none inside Timanfaya.
Cyclists on La Geria and Timanfaya roads
Cyclists ride the LZ-30 through the La Geria vineyards, the roads through Timanfaya and the climb from Órzola to the Mirador del Río, often with little or no shoulder. Leave at least 1.5 meters when you pass; you may cross a solid line if the road ahead is clear.
Wind and sand around Famara
Strong wind is common on Lanzarote, and gusts at Famara have reached 95 km/h. After windy days, sand can pile up on the road into Famara and on other open stretches, and side gusts are strong, so slow down.
Multi-lane roundabouts around Arrecife
Many roundabouts around Arrecife have two or more lanes, and the double roundabout at Playa Honda is known for confusing drivers. Cars already in the roundabout have priority, and you must leave from the outer right lane, so move over before your exit or go around again.
Ironman day in late May
Ironman Lanzarote is held on a Saturday in late May, with a 180 km bike course across the island. Many roads close for much of that day, including the LZ-10 to Haría, the LZ-30 through La Geria, the LZ-67 and Timanfaya National Park.
