Tips for Driving in La Gomera
Mountain roads GM-1, GM-2 and GM-3
La Gomera has no highways, only winding mountain roads, and none of them has tolls. The GM-1 runs from San Sebastián along the north through Hermigua, Agulo and Vallehermoso to Valle Gran Rey. The GM-2 crosses the island through Garajonay National Park, and the GM-3 leads to Playa Santiago and the airport.
Drive times on the island
Distances are short, but the roads are slow. Allow about 60 minutes for the 45 km from the airport to Valle Gran Rey and 50 minutes for the 35 km to San Sebastián. From San Sebastián, Hermigua is about 30 minutes away and Laguna Grande in Garajonay about 35.
Seven gas stations, none in Agulo
The island has only seven gas stations: two in San Sebastián and one each in Hermigua, Vallehermoso, Chipude, Valle Gran Rey and Playa Santiago. There is none in Agulo, and near Garajonay the only one is in Chipude, which closes at 7 p.m. The Vallehermoso station is closed on Sundays.
Rockfalls on the GM-1 into Valle Gran Rey
The GM-1 is the only road into Valle Gran Rey, and the stretch down from Arure past the Arure and Yorima tunnels is exposed to rockfalls. A rockfall blocked it in 2023, and the Cabildo closed it as a precaution during a storm in 2026. Check road notices after heavy rain.
Climb out of San Sebastián (GM-2)
Leaving San Sebastián, the GM-2 climbs about 15 km to Degollada de Peraza, starting with a series of hairpin bends. On the way back down, use a low gear instead of riding the brakes.
Fog in Garajonay
The GM-2 enters the laurel forest of Garajonay National Park at about 1,000 meters, and the upper part of the park is often in damp fog. Turn on your low beams when the cloud drifts across the road, and expect a wet road surface under the trees.
Parking at Laguna Grande
Laguna Grande, the largest recreation area in Garajonay National Park, has a parking lot, toilets and an information point. Like other recreation areas in the park, it can close during wildfire alerts or after storms.
Wildfire alerts in summer
During wildfire alerts, usually in summer, the Cabildo can close the island's trails, forest areas and picnic sites, including those in Garajonay National Park, and driving on forest tracks for leisure is banned. Check the Cabildo's notices before you plan a day in the park.
Tunnels on the GM-1
The GM-1 runs through several tunnels, including La Cumbre and Aguajilva between San Sebastián and Hermigua and the Arure and Yorima tunnels near Valle Gran Rey. Turn on your lights in the tunnels, and during maintenance expect one-lane traffic controlled by flaggers.
